On January 13, 2021 the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump for the second time. The next stage in these proceedings is a trial in the Senate, which will most likely result in an acquittal. There simply aren’t enough senators who would contribute to the two thirds vote required for a conviction. In an era when criminal allegations in the political arena have little or nothing to do with factual evidence, we see the deep resentment between party lines widen the fracture that divides our country.
Most objective legal experts agree that these charges against the president do not fit the requirements for impeachment.
This is far from the first attempt by democrats and republicans to unjustly smear their opposition, and it is doubtful that it will be the last. Already there are attempts in the works for an impeachment of President-Elect Joe Biden and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (the Speaker of the House).
Recent developments in political partisanship are proof that we need change. We need to regroup and clear our heads. Both sides need to cut away the senseless bickering and childish finger pointing and try to do what’s best for the country.
With hard core party liners, change doesn’t seem possible. Many democrats and republicans would rather die with their party flags flying than to extend a hand across the aisle, right or wrong. And, if the truth be told, they are the problem. But they are not necessary for the solution.
Us open minded Americans who are willing to look at both sides of a topic and weigh all evidence without prejudice are the best chance this country has to make it out of this ludicrousness.
The political divide has grown well beyond disagreement or dislike to pure hatred. When did brothers and sisters, neighbors and coworkers, start hating one another over a difference in political opinion? Unfortunately, the first sparks may have come long ago. But that’s where the healing needs to start. The first thing we need to do is extinguish that fire.
If we purge the negative thoughts and emotions from our minds and hearts, then we can begin to think clearer. Next, we’ll need to purge the negativity from our words and actions.
If you tell fellow Americans that they are stupid because of their opinion, then you have destroyed any chance of having a constructive conversation. You have brought negative emotion into the mix. Likewise, if you are greeted with negativity, and respond with a counterattack, then you have thrown gasoline on the fire and caused the flames to spread. But if instead you were to spend your time examining your own thoughts and feelings, your own words and actions, and trying to be courteous to others regardless of their behavior, then you may be able to achieve change.
Common courtesy. That is key.
If we are to judge, we should judge ourselves first. We need to think about what we are doing, with deep contemplative thought and deductive reasoning, and see if it’s the right thing to do.
Democrats, do we really need another kangaroo court with this impeachment? Republicans, do we really need to respond by trying to impeach the president-elect before he is even sworn in?
What we really need, as I stated earlier, is change.
We need peace.
We need truth.
And we need order.
